           The National Association of Retired Federal Employees is dedicated to protecting the well-earned retirement benefits of federal civilian retirees.
            The Association, founded by 14 charter members in 1921, has grown to nearly half a million members.   NARFE has been active in improving federal retirement benefits since 1921.  One need only to look at the history of the system to appreciate NARFE's impact on the retirement program.
Some of  NARFE's accomplishments:  (Space does not permit to list all)
            Successful in obtaining legislation which allowed survivor benefits;
            Responsible for the restoration of a full annuity to a retiree following the death of the spouse;
            Supported computation for annuities from 'High Five Year' to the 'High Three Year' salary basis;
            Worked for passage of the Second Spouse Benefit Bill to allow benefits for a second spouse;
            Worked for an 'Open Season' so retirees could change their health benefits coverage;
            Initiated legislation to allow survivor annuitants to marry at age 55 without loss of retirement benefits;
            Achieved liberalization of the 1983 law which required windfall reduction for social security benefits.  Thus, the reduction for retirees with 21 to 35 years of substantial social security coverage became less severe;
            Supported the Gorton Amendment to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Bill of 1985 which gave federal and military COLAs the same protection from automatic reduction given the social security inflation adjustment;
            In FY 98 Budget, NARFE persuaded Congress not to enact a COLA delay, to drop plans to raise Medicare eligibility age to 67, home health care copays, means testing of Part B premiums, and prevented large premium increases in health benefits.
            NARFE was instrumental in getting legislation enacted that long term care insurance at a reduced rate is available..

ALZHEIMER'S

                Since 1985, NARFE members have played a major role in finding a cure for this disease.  NARFE members have donated nearly   **   to Alzheimer's research.  NARFE seeks to Support research in the cause, prevention, treatment, and cure for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders; to educate the public on the need for research; to encourage and support legislation at the federal, state, and community level that addresses the needs of Alzheimer's victims and their families, including home and institution-based long-term care.

**  As of June 27, 2003 NARFE has raised $5 million reaching this goal approximately two years ahead of schedule.  NARFE now has extended the campaign to "$8 million in 2008".
